A Medieval Iron Rhine? The route Antwerp - Roermond.
Noordbrabants Historisch Jaarboek 20 (2003) 53 - 92.
Evidence is presented for a commercial land route from Antwerp to Cologne, passing Tumhout, Eersel, Bergeijk, Weert and Roermond. This route functioned probably during the 11th and 12th century. After the founding of new towns in this region. this old route broke down and was superseded by new routes, both with directions East-West and North-South. The reconstruction of the old route provides new information about the extend of high Medieval regions. Also the recognition of this old route improves our understanding of the relatively early emergence of Antwerp as a commercial centre.
