International Sand Sculpture Competition
Scheveningen, May 6-June 9

The sand sculpture competition is an annual event at the beach, to draw people just before the real sun bathing season begins. They sculpt to a theme - this year it was mythologies around the world. The medium is a special river sand which can hold fine detail and withstand the weather conditions for a month. The sculptures are very large - 15 to 20 feet high, with incredible detail. This is titled "Ik weet dat ik niets weet."  by Jan Selen of The Netherlands. Translated it means "I know that I know nothing." By challenging the views that man's fate was determined by the gods, Socrates was sentenced to drink a poison cup of hemlock.
