Map of The Netherlands
I
live in The Hague, in the province of South Holland on thewestern shore.
There are 12 provinces in the country. Going clockwise, from The Hague,
Amsterdam, Haarlem and north to Den Helder are in North Holland.
Leeuwarden is in Friesland, and Groningen the capital of a province of
the same name. Drenthe is on the eastern border with Germany. Gelderland
is dominated by the great rivers as they run west: The Waal, Maas, and
Rhine.
The southern thumb is Limburg. Tilburg and
Breda are in North Brabant on the border with Belgium; Middleburg is in
the heart of the islands of Zeeland.
In the center, Utrecht is capital of a province
of the same name, and Flevoland has only existed since 1963 when it was
reclaimed from the Ijsselmeer. To the east of Felvoland is
Overijssel, dominated by the Ijssel river, which was the great trading
highway of the Hassiadic league of cities from 1100 to 1400.
