Gouda Cheese Market

Every summer the town of Gouda has a weekly (Thursday) cheese market in the town square. Now it is a reenactment, but it seems so real. The farmers in their wooden shoes, the merchants in their white coats, after inspecting the cheese go into the bargaining. They slap each other's hands as each offers and counter-offers a price. After agreement, the cheese is carried by horse-drawn wagon to the weigh-house. Click on a photo for a larger image.
