John Bernard Delsman (1852-1904), eldest son of (Johann) Bernard Delsman and Bernardine Eimers, left the Delsman-homefarm at the age of sixteen for an apprenticeship in his uncle's Eimers general merchantile store in Desmoines, Iowa. This is where he met his future wife, Clara Heitkemper. She had left Germany together with her paternal grandfather (who died during the six-week passage), father (who died ten days after arrival in Des Moines) and three brothers in 1858 to join her fathers brother, who had a rather prosperous farm near Des Moines.

In 1874 at the age of 22, John Bernard came to Columbus. For three months he was employed as a clerk in the store of J. C. Morrissey. He then returned to Wisconsin, making a short visit to his parents and returning to Columbus; after clerking for two months, he opened a grocery store.

Clara Heitkemper had stayed in Iowa, but after having received a letter from John Bernard she left for Omaha where the two were married before a Catholic priest in 1875. .

John Bernard dealt in dry goods, boots and shoes, hats and caps and groceries, His shop was located at Eleventh street, Columbus, and established in 1875. From 1877 to 1882, the business was managed by a firm, J.B. Delsman & Co. On the 1st of January, 1882, John Bernard bought the entire interest, and from then on conducted the store solely in his own name. He carried a stock of $9,000, and gave employment to three men. In 1882, John Bernard was elected City Treasurer.

In the financial panic of 1888 the shop had to close. Although there was plenty of money in the books the wholesalers came one day and demanded the keys to the store. They immediately loaded out the stock on two big drays.

As the papers said that everybody was doing so well in Oregon John Bernard decided to move to Oregon with his family. The money for the journey was given to them by either John Bernard's mother Bernardine Eimers or by Anna Delsman-Stadler. They settled on the Trask River at Tillamook. John Bernard worked hard after hours keeping the books for the Creamery after farming all day.

The wet climate, however, was not good for John Bernard. Somewhere around 1902 he and his family moved to Hillsboro, Oregon, where he bought a small ranch. After his death in 1904 his wife, Clara Heitkemper, and three of the children (Bernard Ludwig, Mary Rose and Charles Herman) moved to Ashland.

Dear bro(ther) and family,

Long since I have written to you and am so thoughtless that I don't even know if I or you have written last but now I must lett you know that on the 24 of Sept(ember) we got a little boy and we call him Henr. Char. He is a little fatty
