Tunisia (1985)
In 1985 my wife Corrie and I (Jan) made a 1 week long, very well organized, guided tour
in Tunisia,
offered by Eurojet. It was our first experience with an arabic country. The tour
was well organised by some government organisation. We have seen a lot to remember
and we enjoyed the country, the markets, the history and the people.
There is a map of Tunisia
available to make the route more clearly.
Our Route
- Monastir, of which parts of the scenery can be seen in the film Jesus Christ Superstar. We slept a night in an enormous hotel.
- El Djem, with the famous old Roman Collosseum. It was surprisingly silent here.
- Sfax, an old city with impressive city walls and where a nice kashbah was found.
- Gabes, an oasis near the border of the desert. Tip: buy a thick
journal to protect yourself while riding a camel. We endured a ride of 1 hour. In the
beginning you feel like a king, but later on you become miserable.
- Matmata, where homes were made in caves. The most important object in the houses was always the bed.
- Hamt Souk on Djedda Island, via a desert way and a causeway. On Djedda were many palms. Also we appreciated the swim in the sea after our desert journey.
- Gafsa, on the main land again, with a nice mountain ridge. Gafsa was reached
in the evening after a long wide which we made us very sleepy. We had seen lonely deserts with lots of
red coloured stones. Part of the road was also bordered with sand.
- Tozeur, at the salt lakes. Indeed the horizon was trembling and did we see trees there? In Tozeur we visited the desert zoo where one can caress a lion.
- Nefta, a nice oasis, where a music and dancing program was offered. We bought
several pieces of sand rose stones here.
- Sousse, which meant a Kashbah day.
- Kairouan, with an impressive mosque. Here we bought
our wall carpet. Several weeks later I could get it at the Customs
in Roosendaal (Netherlands).
- Tunis, after visiting old Carthago at the bay with the wellknown vulcano at
the other side. In Tunis we explored the Kashbah.
