Warren is not there, and I don't hear a trace of Blixa. Judging from the songs, these are all recorded some time before final versions. Excellent sound quality. Black Hair, West Country Girl and Are You The One are not as good as the album versions. Babe, I Got You Bad is also less worked out, more clearly revealing that the rhythm of that song is a slowed down version of Iggy Pop's "Lust For Life". I never noticed that before. THE GARDEN DUET is a real duet. Uptempo, about two lovers looking forward to meet. Nick does both voices, which is a pity, it would have been nicer to hear Kylie sing "I will open up my legs for him". Somewhat annoying are the bombastic church bells that introduce this song, which would need further working out. FAREWELL, GOODBYE, SO LONG is a slow ballad, realizing the relationship is over. Would have fitted perfectly on The Boatman's Call. I GOT ANOTHER WOMAN NOW, DEAR is quite different from the sketches of the song as played in Loladamusica on Dutch TV, late 1997. This song has a strong bass line like O'Malley's Bar or Stagger Lee, and the singing also sounds more like that era. The title says it all: lyrically this is quite the opposite to "I Do, Dear, I Do". He is telling his former love how happy he is with this new woman, (blue eyes and straight blond hair) in a very bitter manner. The last 5 minutes of the songs consist of an amateurish piano solo. OPIUM TEA is in King Ink II, page 178. A nice song, jazzy with an organ. The singing is more like MB than TBC, but where would this one fit in? It would make a great b-side for sure. I DO DEAR I DO, a slow ballad about wishing the very best to a past lover. Another true gem for Boatman's Call fans. WAKE UP MY LOVER is the weakest song of this collection. The singing is sloppy and the song does not sound finished. Some lyrics have later appeared in 'Come Into My Sleep'. SHEEP MY SAFELY GRAZE, my favorite. It's a lullabye that Nick sings for Luke. Very tender, very beautiful. See King Ink II, page 176. One could imagine Nick doing an album of lullabies, doing songs like this one and All The Pretty Little Horses. (Some may argue that TBC is already an album of lullabies, but ok. ;) Apparently this song was rejected by The Bad Seeds (as Nick says in the Cucamonga interview), but I hope they will reconsider that. It didn't fit on TBC, but might be appropriate elsewhere. Just imagine Luke falling asleep with all comforting words, and then, finally asleep, his father ending with: "The fox has its hole The bird has its nest But the son of man Has no place to lay his head and rest."
